Sports Ministry To Have Say In New Super Eagles Coach

The Sports Ministry headed by Sports Minister Sunday Dare has given the strongest hint yet that it will have to be involved in the hiring of the next Super Eagles coach should Gernot Rohr’s contract be eventually terminated.

The ministry, it was gathered, was not privy to the latest contract the NFF signed with Rohr even though it has oversight function to do so.

“The NFF knows that any plans to hire another coach must start with first briefing the Minister/FG about the Rohr issue and bring a closure to it to avoid embarrassing Nigeria,” a top ministry official declared.

“Secondly, the decision to hire anybody as national coach must be discussed and undergo review.

“The Super Eagles is Nigeria’s property, not a premier league club.”

In a statement signed by the ministry’s permanent secretary Ismail Abubakar, the NFF are expected to submit today a technical report on the group phase of the 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Nigeria finished top of Group C with 12 points, two points more than second-placed Cape Verde.

However, experts say the three-time African champions were not convincing and may struggle in the final playoffs in March 2022 that will determine the five teams to represent Africa at the World Cup in Qatar.
