Official: Tear Gas From Stadium Riot Killed CAF Official

Tear gas fired by security men to disperse angry fans who went on the rampage at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup may have caused the death of CAF official Joseph Kabungo, according to a high-placed official.

Zambian medical doctor Kabungo was the doping officer assigned by CAF for the Eagles decisive World Cup playoff against Ghana in Abuja Tuesday.

The NFF said the official was gasping for breath before he slumped and died around the dressing room of Ghana suspected of a heart attack.

Earlier reports had suggested he was beaten up by the angry fans who destroyed property and even attempted to attack some of the Super Eagles to protest Nigeria crashing out of the World Cup.

A top official told www.insideglasshouse.com: “The official probably died after inhaling the tear gas fired by the police who tried to disperse the rioters.”

The official’s  family have since disagreed with the NFF version of the circumstances leading to the death.

A nine-man delegation that will include the family doctor and a pathologist is due in Nigeria to ascertain the cause of death.
